In recent years, pink imported "rose salt" has rapidly gained popularity online, becoming a so-called "premium salt" in the eyes of many consumers. Numerous e-commerce vendors have advertised their rose salt as "natural and additive-free" and "high in nutritional value".

On major online retail platforms, many stores named "XX Overseas Flagship Store" are selling "Himalayan rock salt (rose salt)". Their sales volumes range from at least 2,000+ to over 20,000+ units. The price per 500 grams generally sits around 50 yuan, with a more expensive variant reaching 240 yuan. In contrast, higher-end domestically produced salt typically costs 6–7 yuan per 500 grams.
Public information indicates that "rose salt", also known as "Himalayan rock salt", is a type of natural rock salt primarily mined from salt deposits in the Himalayan Mountains. Its pink color comes from trace amounts of minerals such as iron and magnesium.

Hou Dianzhi, an associate professor at the School of Food and Health at Beijing Technology and Business University, pointed out that while rose salt is promoted as containing various trace minerals, their actual concentrations are minimal and contribute negligibly to daily nutritional needs. Hou noted that natural foods such as milk and vegetables offer far more meaningful mineral supplementation.
Hou further explained that rose salt, being a naturally occurring rock salt, could contain heavy metals like lead, arsenic, and chromium if not properly refined, which may pose health risks over prolonged consumption.
According to Hou, the primary role of salt is to deliver sodium and enhance flavor, and for most consumers, ordinary table salt remains a cost-effective, safe, and adequate choice for everyday use.

Edible salt is mainly categorized into sea salt, lake salt, and rock salt, sourced respectively from seawater, natural brine, and underground salt deposits. This means all edible salt is naturally formed, not artificially synthesized. Therefore, the "natural and additive-free" label is essentially a marketing gimmick for trendy salts, with no fundamental difference from ordinary refined salt.
Journalists noted that market regulatory authorities in several regions have issued reminders that in China, "rose salt" is approved only for industrial use. It does not meet the national food safety standards for edible salt and must not be circulated or used as such.
