馬丁·愛德華·赫爾曼因與迪菲和默克爾共同發明了公開密鑰加密技術而聞名于世。這項技術是保障互聯網安全交易的基石，每天被用于轉移數萬億美元。他是2015年圖靈獎得主，并當選為美國國家工程院院士。

20世紀80年代，赫爾曼教授幫助推動美蘇兩國科學界就核彈時代人類思維應如何演進以確保生存進行有意義的對話。他與莫斯科的Anatoly Gromyko教授共同撰寫了《突破：新思維的出現》一書，該書于1987年以英文和俄文成功出版。此外，他還致力于克服大學里的種族間的緊張關系，為此三次獲得少數族裔學生組織的嘉獎。

1945年10月出生于紐約市。1966年獲紐約大學工程學士，1967年和1969年獲斯坦福大學電子工程碩士和博士學位。曾在IBM華生研究中心和MIT任職，1971年回到斯坦福大學工作，直至1996年成為榮譽教授。他發表了超過70篇技術論文，擁有12項美國專利和若干項外國專利。

Martin Edward Hellman is best known for his invention, with Diffie and Merkle, of public key cryptography, the technology that enables secure Internet transactions and is used to transfer trillions of dollars every day. His work has been recognized by numerous honors and awards, including election to the National Academy of Engineering and the million-dollar ACM Turing Award, often called "the Nobel Prize of Computer Science."

During the 1980's, Prof. Hellman helped develop meaningful dialogue between the Soviet and American scientific communities on how human thinking had to evolve for survival in the nuclear age. He co-edited Breakthrough: Emerging New Thinking with Prof. Anatoly Gromyko of Moscow, published simultaneously in Russian and English in 1987. He also worked to overcome ethnic tension within the university, for which he received three awards from minority student organizations.

Born in New York in October 1945, he received his B.E. from New York University in 1966, and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1967 and 1969, all in Electrical Enginerring. He served on Stanford's regular faculty from 1971 until becoming Professor Emeritus in 1996. He has authored over seventy technical papers and holds twelve US patents and a number of foreign equivalents.
