12月21日，日本防衛大臣小泉進次郎訪問了長崎縣，在陸上自衛隊相浦駐屯地視察了負責水陸兩棲作戰的專業部隊。
陸上自衛隊的“水陸機動團”是一支在離島遭到攻擊時實施登陸并奪回島嶼等作戰任務的部隊。
小泉防衛大臣不僅觀摩了水中訓練，還親自接觸相關裝備，并試乘了水陸兩棲裝甲車“AAV7”，以確認其機動性能等情況。
此外，他還將駐地內區域假設為離島，視察了包括運輸機“魚鷹”（Osprey）在內的展開訓練。
