Elizabeth Bennet had been obliged, by the scarcity of gentlemen, to sit down for two dances; and during part of that time, Mr. Darcy had been standing near enough for her to overhear a conversation between him and Mr. Bingley, who came from the dance for a few minutes, to press his friend to join it.
1. Elizabeth Bennet
2. obliged
3. scarcity
用法:“the scarcity of gentlemen”,男士數量不足。
4. overhear
用法:“to overhear a conversation”,無意中聽到對話。
5. press
用法:“to press his friend to join it”,勸說朋友跳舞。
1. Elizabeth Bennet had been obliged, by the scarcity of gentlemen, to sit down for two dances;
“had been obliged to”,不得不。
“by the scarcity of gentlemen”,由于男士稀缺。
“sit down for two dances”,坐下來錯過兩支舞。
2. and during part of that time, Mr. Darcy had been standing near enough for her to overhear a conversation between him and Mr. Bingley,
“during part of that time”,在這期間。
“a conversation between him and Mr. Bingley”,他和賓利之間的對話。
3. who came from the dance for a few minutes, to press his friend to join it.
“who came from the dance”,從舞池中走出來的人。
“for a few minutes”,幾分鐘。
“to press his friend to join it”,勸說他的朋友跳舞。
