A recent exchange between a high school senior and the principal of Shenzhen Bao'an Middle School (High School Division) has captured public attention, highlighting a meaningful moment of education beyond the classroom.

Amid intense preparation for the national college entrance exam, or gaokao, a student wrote to the school requesting the removal of bird nests on campus, citing disturbance from bird songs. Rather than granting the request, Yuan Weixing, the school's Party secretary and principal, responded with an open letter, turning the moment into an impromptu lesson on life.
In his letter, Yuan first acknowledged the elegance of the student's writing, then elaborated on three key reflections:
Nature follows its own rhythm. Bird songs are part of courting and communication — innate behaviors. The world does not pause for human activities, and learning to coexist with other species is an essential part of growing up.
Disturbances can become memories. Years later, what feels like a disruption today may become a cherished part of one's gaokao experience. Resilience, the principal noted, is often forged in moments of discomfort.
Learning to engage with the world around us. The lush, green campus is precisely why birds choose to nest there. Their calls, while intrusive at times, are also part of the ecosystem students belong to.

"I understand your urgency, but I cannot grant your request," Yuan wrote. "Not because I don't sympathize with your hard work, but because I want you to understand: the ultimate goal of education is not to make the world adapt to us, but to help us learn to live with the world."
The principal also suggested that the student try reframing the bird songs as natural white noise or even a "dusk concert" — a chance to rest and reset between study sessions.
While acknowledging the significance of the gaokao, Yuan emphasized that cultivating the ability to respect life, coexist with the natural world, and navigate discomfort are lasting assets, especially in an age shaped by artificial intelligence.
